Advanced Surfactants for Optimal Metal Surface Treatment Solutions

Product Description

Product Description

Surfactant by Guangzhou Zhifan Chemical Co., Ltd.

Surfactant, also known as interfacial agent, is a compound that can significantly reduce the surface tension or interfacial tension between two liquids, between liquid and gas, or between liquid and solid.

Application Areas

Reducing surface tension
Reducing surface tension is the most basic function of surfactants. There is a macroscopic tension in the surface layer of the liquid that makes the liquid surface shrink to the minimum as much as possible, that is, surface tension. After the addition of surfactants, the surfactant forms a thin film on the surface of the liquid, changes the molecular arrangement of the liquid surface, and thus reduces the surface tension.

Forming micelles
Micelles refer to ordered aggregates of molecules that begin to form in large quantities in aqueous solution after the surfactant concentration reaches a certain value.

Surfactants are dissolved in water. When their concentration is low, they are dispersed as single molecules or adsorbed on the surface of the solution to reduce the surface tension. When the concentration of surfactants increases to the point where the surface of the solution is saturated and can no longer be adsorbed, the molecules of the surfactants begin to move into the interior of the solution. Since the hydrophobic part of the surfactant molecule has a low affinity with water, while the attraction between the hydrophilic parts is large, when a certain concentration is reached, the hydrophobic parts of many surfactant molecules (generally 50 to 150) attract each other and associate together to form an association body, which is a micelle. Micelles have various shapes, such as spherical, lamellar, and rod-shaped.

Product Description

(1) Emulsification: Due to the high surface tension of oil in water, when oil is dropped into water and stirred vigorously, the oil is crushed into fine beads and mixed into an emulsion, but the layers are separated again after the stirring stops. If a surfactant is added and stirred vigorously, it is difficult to separate for a long time after the stirring stops. This is the emulsification effect. The reason is that the hydrophobicity of the oil is surrounded by the hydrophilic groups of the surfactant, forming a directional attraction, which reduces the work required for the oil to disperse in water and makes the oil well emulsified.

(2) Wetting: There is often a layer of wax, grease or scaly substances on the surface of the parts, which are hydrophobic. Due to the contamination of these substances, the surface of the parts is not easily wetted by water. When a surfactant is added to the aqueous solution, the water droplets on the parts are easily dispersed, which greatly reduces the surface tension of the parts and achieves the purpose of wetting.

(3) Solubilization: Oil substances can only be dissolved after adding surfactants, but this dissolution can only occur when the concentration of the surfactant reaches the critical concentration of the colloid. The solubility is determined by the solubilization object and its properties. In terms of solubilization, long hydrophobic hydrocarbon chains are stronger than short hydrocarbon chains, saturated hydrocarbon chains are stronger than unsaturated hydrocarbon chains, and nonionic surfactants generally have a more significant solubilization effect.

(4) Dispersion effect: Solid particles such as dust and dirt particles are more likely to gather together and settle in water. The molecules of surfactants can divide solid particle aggregates into fine particles, disperse them in the solution, and promote the uniform dispersion of solid particles.

(5) Foaming effect: The formation of foam is mainly due to the directional adsorption of the surfactant, which is caused by the reduction of the surface tension between the gas and liquid phases. Generally, low-molecular surfactants are easy to foam, while high-molecular surfactants have less foam. Myristic acid yellow has the highest foaming property, while sodium stearate has the worst foaming property. Anionic surfactants have better foaming property and foam stability than nonionic surfactants, such as sodium alkylbenzene sulfonate, which has a strong foaming property. Commonly used foam stabilizers include fatty alcohol amides, carboxymethyl cellulose, etc., and foam inhibitors include fatty acids, fatty acid esters, silicon-containing polyethers, etc. and other nonionic surfactants.
