Sodium Metabisulfite

 

Sodium metabisulfite (Na₂S₂O₅) is a white or yellow crystal with a strong pungent smell. It is soluble in water and the aqueous solution is acidic. When in contact with a strong acid, it releases sulfur dioxide and generates corresponding salts. However, if exposed to air for an extended period, it will oxidize into sodium sulfate, making long-term storage impractical.
